SAD NEWS

My, a lot has happened since I was last able to get on a Drive. A week or so ago I told you about an Ellie that was at the time thought to have had a miscarriage and was not doing well. It seems that so many were concerned about the lady in question that an exception was made to have vets check her out. Normally this is not done unless the problem is cause by humans. According to the notice on WE it was determined that that Ellie was rather old and was suffering from constipation. The decision at the time was to let her live out her life naturally, as her calf was old enough to get on without her and had been accepted by the herd. It appears that the herd moved into northern Sabi Sands area where Sun morning the Ellie was found dead. There are tracks indicating that the herd and her calf were with her at the end, so she was not alone. Pieter plans on writing detailed blog soon, The WE blog link can be found listed on the right.

NEWS ON DJUMA ELLIE

It is my understanding that the Ellie in question has had a miscarriage.  The cause of which has not been determined.  While this is a dangerous situation for the Ellie it is possible for her body to remedy the situation by breaking down the fetus and then expelling it.  There is no way of telling at this point if that will be the case. Time will tell. Of course, whatever happens is all a part of nature and it has been decided to let nature take it's course.  As I understand it, the risk to the Ellie if medical staff were to step in is too great.  Policy is generally to let nature take it's course unless the injury is from human action (such as getting caught up in trash, being hit by a vehicle or injuries suffered from poachers snares)and if there is something that can be done.

I know there are a lot of positive thoughts, energies and prayers going towards her and I can't help but think that will help.  And it appears that she is in very good health otherwise which is in her favor.

I'd like to thank Pieter P. for giving us some insight into what is happening.  You can also check the WE blog(link at right), as I'm sure they'll post something when they hear any news.  I will post if I hear anymore.  I would like to ask that anyone who hears anything to please forward the info to Little Bit and I'll share whatever news we gather.  Thanks.

NEWS FROM WILDEARTH

There's a new stream at WE. It will feature a program called Operation Migration. I'm sure some of you have heard of this before. It's where young Whooping Cranes are raised by 'human cranes' and then shown how and where to migrate. We've seen spots in the news with these young birds following the ultra light plane, well now we'll have a inside peek at what goes on daily. For right now the cam is on a holding pen where the cranes are being 'trained' to follow the plane south in the fall. It looks to be a fascinating adventure, one which I'm looking forward to joining in.

NEW CAM IN IRELAND

WildEarth sure is putting together a very nice selection of cams for us to view. In addition to the cams in the post below they have also welcomed a bird cam set up in South Kilkenny Ireland ! It says 'common robin' but after reading WE's blog about it (the cam owner says that there are several types of birds nesting) I'm thinking 2 things. 1 ~ It's only running during daylight hours (in Ireland) and 2 ~ the cam is moved from time to time. Today's view is a view of Blue Tits.

No matter the bird, babies are always hungry, lol.

I'd say this is Dad ...

and Mom. Same markings, color isn't as bright. Either way they sure are pretty little things.

NEW CAMS

New Eagle nest from Santa Catalina Island, California. From what I've read this nest is a bit noteworthy because there were 2 females and 1 male that were cooperatively breeding from 1991 through 2007 breeding season. One of the females was missing at the start of the 2008 season.

These 2 are larger so we may not have a lot of time with them. So check them out soon before they're gone !

There are also 2 new cams set up underwater on the Wolf River in Wisconsin. As of yet I've only seen water so no pictures but I have faith that my frequent checking will be rewarded. The link to their website is Wolf River cams

1 DOWN, 1 TO GO AT HORNBY ISLAND

I woke up this morning to find that the first eaglet has arrived !

Doing a bit of house cleaning

If I remember right the second egg was laid about a week after the first, so we should have another eaglet in 6/7 days.

Went back after work and was rewarded with a feeding. Poor little thing is still a bit wobbly.

And mighty hungry !

it appears that the eggs at the O.W.L. nest are not going to hatch. Nature isn't always cute, fuzzy or fair but it is Nature.

On a brighter note, the 3 newbies over at the Sidney nest look to be in very good shape.

Still waiting for a peek at the Hornby Island nest, every time I go one of them is sitting, LOL. And if I have figured correctly (good chance I haven't though) it's getting close to the 'Big Day' there. I've taken to poking the screen in an effort to get some movement, lol. Just a gentle poke. Problem is never works. Oh well, one of these days.

MOUNT REDOUBT

Late Sunday night and early Monday morning Mount Redoubt in Alaska erupted. As of this posting it's still dark so I'm not sure of the exact view but I do have a link for a cam there. On the US WEB CAM page the first link is for Alaskan cam and one of them is for Mount Redoubt. I am planning to check back often and hope to capture a picture or two for here.

Hornby Island cam 1 (notice the boxlike object behind the words)

Makes for a very good spot to sit and view the world.

It also makes a GREAT spot to put a cam.

This is definitely a cam I'll be keeping an eye on. Sound from this cam is very good and we should be in for a real treat when hatching times comes for this nest.

SAD NEWS FROM DJUMA

Word was received today that the remains of Wonky were found in the Djuma area. It appears that Wonky succumbed to wounds from a battle with another Bull Ellie.

Got some new sites for you to check out. So here goes ~


Site #1 ~ Photo Africa Blog
This site is a lot like this one but (and there's always a but lol) the pictures here aren't from a web cam but shots taken by Field Guides and Wildlife Photographers 'in the wild'. So take a look at it, it has some very good shots and some amazing stories to go with them. Nothing like getting the story behind the shot straight from the photographer.

Site #2 ~ National Geographic's Reef Cam
NatGeo has a new cam. It's set up at Glover's Atoll in Belize. About 1969 feet from shore and 66 feet deep, it captures the wonder of the Reef. Not as exciting as Lions and such I know but the wonders of the Sea soothe the soul.

EARLY ON THE MORNING OF AUG. 18, 2008 HE GOT WORD THAT HIS PHOTO, ALONG WITH 49 OTHERS, HAD BEEN CHOSEN ! HERE IS WHAT HE SENT FOR ALL OF YOU ~



First of all, I want to thank everyone who cast a vote and rated my photo. It would not have happened without all of you!

As a matter of fact, I have dealt with this group before, when they went by the website name of photo.com. Actually, I have been published two other times with this group. The first time was with a photo of Doobie, called "Shadowcat". The shot was taken with my previously- owned camera, the Konica-Minolta DiMage Z1. This was the same type of camera that Finny in the UK had. When she went to the Panasonic Lumix, I followed suit.The rest is photographic history! LOL The other photo I had published was called "Dinner for One", and featured a lone chickadee perched on a feeder right outside our patio door.This shot was taken with ROLL FILM (remember that stuff?), using my trusty Canon Maxuum Pro 7. The color and resolution leave a lot to be desired, mainly because I was at the mercy of my own exposure decision, and the processing lab! Thank the Lord for digital!

I have attached both photos for your examination!
