Yesterday morning (7/6/08), the giant panda Guo Guo, gave birth to twins at Bifengxia, part of the China Conservation & Research Center for the Giant Pandas. The twins are the first to be born this year and the first since the devastating earthquake in Wenchuan. Guo Guo was one of the six pandas evacuated immediately after the earthquake from Wolong to Bifengxia.
This is indeed Great News for all panda lovers and for the Giant Panda Species.

MORE ON EVIDENCE
Evidence has Emergency Surgery
Emergency Trip Back to Auburn University

On Monday morning, June 23, Jama and "Pop" Hedgecoth at Noah's Ark rushed Evidence the baby zebra back to Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine for emergency surgery. They noticed that w
hen he urinated, the flow was not coming out properly and knew that the urethra had begun to close up - a life threatening situation for the zebra who had already suffered from traumatic injury and had been abandoned.
The Auburn team rushed him into surgery and performed a permanent urethrostomy. This provides a permanent alternative path for an animal to eliminate fluid waste from the body.
The original injuries that Evidence sustained as a result of being struck by a car included a severed urethra. A temporary catheter was in place for several weeks, but it had gradually worked its way out, allowing the opening to begin to close. The urethrostomy is a proc
edure that has been successful in domestic animals.
Following the surgery, Evidence began to recover, with Noah's Ark founders Pop and Jama by his side. "He likes me," says Jama, "but he LOVES Pop!"
As the little guy began to awaken and move around, he begin to have an adverse reaction to the anesthesia. He began to exhibit signs of colic, a condition that can occur in equines. It advanced to an emergency situation and doctors decided his stomach would have to be pumped. As the night wore on, it was touch and go for this brave little zebra.
After Evidence's stomach was pumped, Pop began to walk him to help ease the colic. Each time Pop would step away from him, the baby zebra would become agitated, calming only when Pop was back at his side.

It was long night for everyone, and included much prayer - it even appeared that Pop and Evidence were in prayer together!
At long last, the colic began to ease and it appeared that Evidence had once more pulled through with a strong will to survive.
As Evidence began to recover, he began to regain his personality and start to show the feisty spirit he has become known fo
r at Noah's Ark. Pop allowed Evidence to wear his hat - the one the zebra likes to snatch from Pop and throw around in his stall!
After a long, anxious night, the veterinary staff at Auburn pronounced Evidence ready to go home and begin his recovery at the Ark.
This time the little guy didn't have to ride in the back of Noah's Ark's Children Care Homes van.. He rode to and from the University in a two-horse trailer that was made possible through generous donations.
On Tuesday, June 24 at around Noon, Evidence, Pop and Jama rolled back into Noah's Ark's front gate. "We're exhausted," said Jama,"...all except Evidence!" she laughed. "He's back in his barn with his toys and acting full of himself again."
So it would appear, as he gives a gap-toothed smile just outside his barn door - revealing the place where two front teeth were knocked out during his interstate ordeal. But, not to worry - the docs say they were baby teeth and should come back in when he's about two-years old.
Please keep this sweet baby boy in your prayers as he continues to recover and yet again shows "evidence" of God's Grace in action. And don't forget to come and meet him at Noah's Ark on Saturday, July 12 at Noon!

I weight 279 pounds now - I've gained 59 pounds
since coming to Noah's Ark! I still drink Folac milk replacement two times a day, and I love it!

NEWS ON EVIDENCE
July 12, 2008
That's the date that Evidence will make his public debut in his new habitat at Noah's Ark. This beautiful baby boy has been recuperating at Noah's Ark and is finally well enough to come out and thank you for making his recovery possible.
On Saturday, July 12 at Noon, Evidence will be moved to his new habitat, near the ostriches. He'll spend his days grazing and saying hello to all of his new friends.
The story of this baby zebra has been a remarkable one - one that found it's way across the nation and beyond.
Evidence's story will be available in an illustrated children's book for the very first time at the July 12 event, as well as some other souvenir items that have been made possible through donated materials.
We invite you to come out and help us celebrate this happy ending to what could have been a tragic story. The little lost zebra who was severely injured - is now a happy, feisty part of the Noah's Ark family just waiting to say "Hello and thank you!"
Thanks for sharing this DaveKay
So if anyone just happens to be in the area, go enjoy and send pictures LOL

PANDA UPDATE 6/08
Pandas International • P.O. Box 620335 • Littleton, Colorado 80162 • 303.933.2365
Beginning at the End
From Pandas International Director, Suzanne Braden, from Wolong Reserve, China — I have a hard time with funerals. I never could have anticipated the one I attended a few days ago. When I began my journey to Wolong, I knew it would be difficult but I never could have expected how it ended! The profound grief was deeply felt by everyone attending. Voices cracked, and tears flowed. Dr. Li spoke fondly of the deceased.
After the headstone, a large rock, was placed, two apples and a large slice of panda bread were set out for Mao Mao by her caretaker, He Changgui. These items were for her Journey.
After the staff had left the burial site, He Changgui laid his head on my shoulder and we both cried. I put my arm around him and told him he must look after her babies and their babies for future generations to love and care for.
Mao Mao was one of the two pandas listed as still missing after the May 12th earthquake. Unfortunately she was in her enclosure the entire time. Mao Mao, only 9 years old, was rescued from the wild and brought to Wolong for care. She was well cared for and loved by all.
At Wolong she had several cubs including one set of twins. Staff referred to her as the “Hero Mother.
"What happened?
The Wolong panda reserve sits in a deep “V shaped” valley with mountains on both sides. The mountain on one side of the reserve came down in several spots, closing the main entrance gate, and causing major damage to several panda enclosures.
The mountain on the other side also experienced major rock/land slides. What I remember as a beautiful mountain covered with trees and foliage became a gray barren, desolate pile of rocks. Mao Mao’s enclosure was next to the river. The road to Wolong was right next to the river. The slide which came down on this side closed the road and blocked the river. The slide created a dam in the river, like in many other places in China. Due to the dam the water began to rise and staff worried it would come over the exterior wall into Mao Mao’s enclosure. Mao Mao must have been sitting close to the enclosure wall as the water was rising.
As the pressure of the water on the dam increased, the dam gave way to the force of the water behind it. The dam blew out in both directions with powerful force causing the wall next to Mao Mao to tumble in on top of her. Hopefully she never knew what hit her.
Not knowing where she was when the wall came down, staff thought she might have escaped the enclosure. It was not until the body began to decompose that the staff realized she might be buried under the wall. After arriving on Monday, I was told they felt confident that she was under the wall. Workers had been removing mud and debris on top of the wall for several days. This was a slow arduous process as all the work had to be totally done by hand since no large equipment could make it to the area.
Tuesday, June 10th, after a decontamination crew arrived, workers began to manually remove a large slab of the concrete wall. Workers lifted enough to get a rope around the top of the slab. Then as one set of workers pulled the rope others inserted medal bars to try to pry the portion of the wall up. When the piece was finally removed, it was difficult to see anything but mud. As the mud was shoveled away, a shape began to emerge, and the body was slowly exhumed. Dr. Wang used a transponder to read the Chip under the skin, to positively confirm Mao Mao’s identification. Dr. Li and Director Zhang confirmed the numeric ID. A small wooden box was brought in and remains were carefully placed inside. Everything was repeatedly sanitized for the health of the workers and staff. The funeral followed immediately. On May 12th we lost Mao Mao.
We are not sure at this time how may wild pandas have been lost. Pandas International is accepting memorial donations in memory of Mao Mao for use in the rebuilding efforts. To make a tax-deductible contribution, please send checks payable to
Pandas International at P.O. Box 620335 , Littleton , Colorado 80162 , or view daily updates and donate online at www.pandasinternational.org. Complete reports of Journey to Wolong coming shortly.

UPDATE ON EVIDENCE 6/13/08
Evidence at Home...
It seems some things can happen only at Noah's Ark. Evidence the baby zebra has settled nicely into his new home - and has shattered all of the zebra stereotypes. Zebras as a whole are known as the "bad boys" of the equine family with a tough, no nonsense, "pounce first, ask questions later" temperament. Evidence, while biting and kicking just enough to keep up his reputation, has made friends with two of the family cats! Their rubbing on his legs, as cats do, has made it easier for his caregivers to get him used to having his feet and legs handled.
Evidence has not yet moved to his new public habitat, but it's in the works. The habitat is under construction, and once his catheter is removed this month, plans are to bring him out for his "public debut" sometime in July. He'll hang out with his public during open hours, then return to his very own "zebra barn," donated by a generous donor, for the night.
Other donors have made it possible for us to publish an illustrated children's book about Evidence's plight. We'll send you an update when it's ready!

UPDATE ON TENNESSEE LADIES

I've been following a story on one of the Ellie Sanctuary's most beloved residents. I am a regular recipient of the "Trunklines" and the "Ele-buzz" newsletters, so I've known about this for some time. I think it's worth reading.
On the blogsite, go to "US web Cams". Click on "Tenn Elephants" Once you get to the website, look for the navigation bar at the top of the page -- put the cursor on "Our Elephants". On the drop-down menu, go to "Asian Ele-Diaries". Once you're on that page, scroll down to the first entry, dated March 9. It's about Delhi. I've attached the picture that accompanies the article. There are other earlier entries in the Diary concerning her, and they're worth reading. All these entries just reinforce my feelings about these very extraordinary animals, and how incredibly sensitive and compassionate they are, and their amazing interaction is really something to behold.
I think you"ll understand what I'm saying after you read a few of these entries.

PANDA UPDATE
Wolong News
Denver, CO May 20, 2008 — Director Ke from the State Forest Authority and Wang Yong Yue of Wolong have announced five deaths have occurred connected to the Wolong Panda Nature Reserve AND / OR the Wolong Breeding Center. Four members of the Security Administration and the Police Director from Wolong lost their lives during the earthquake. All the directors, veterinarians and staff members escaped serious injuries. There is no official word being released yet about the Wolong Center’s pandas except for the following, plus news sent to Pandas International reporting all the panda houses were damaged:
.
CHENGDU, May 20 (Xinhua) – A total of eight pandas selected to entertain tourists at the Olympic Games period, are expected to leave for Beijing on May 24 as scheduled, despite the quake hitting their hometown in Sichuan. The animals, all in good shape, arrived in the panda breeding base in the provincial capital of Chengdu on Sunday night from Wolong, waiting for a flight to Beijing, an official with the Sichuan Provincial Forestry Bureau told Xinhua on Tuesday. "They will take a special plane to Beijing on May 24 if no other accident happens, but the ceremony and the series of activities to mark their leaving are all cancelled," said Xiong Beirong, head of the bureau's wildlife protection branch. The animals would be accompanied by their keepers during the flight. "The keepers, who are quite familiar to them, will also take care of them during their stay in Beijing to help them get over any after-quake mental problems," said Xiong. Some of the pandas behaved nervously and had less sleep and food after the quake, which has left nearly 40,000 people killed so far. "It's necessary to have these people, who began to take care of the pandas since they were born, be with them now. Especially as they are facing the challenges of living in a strange place," she said. A grand ceremony to see off the pandas was to have been held in Wolong-based China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, which is home to 86 pandas, as a promotion for panda protection. However, the 8.0-magnitude earthquake, its epicenter is about 30 kilometers from Wolong, jolted Sichuan on May 12, leaving five Wolong center staff workers killed, two pandas injured, six pandas missing and panda houses damaged.
.
As of Tuesday morning, four of the six missing pandas had returned to Wolong and staff are searching for the other two. "Rescuing the missing pandas and taking care of the others in the center are our top priorities now," said Xiong, adding aftershocks could be felt in Wolong at every few hours. The eight two-year-old pandas, selected by citizens from 16 candidates born in 2006 in the Wolong center, will be on display at the Beijing Zoo until November, and are expected to attract more than six million tourists from home and abroad during the six-month show. The zoo has already begun to upgrade its facilities to accommodate the additional animals. There are about 1,590 pandas living in the wild in China, mostly in Sichuan and the northwestern province of Shaanxi and Gansu. Another 180 have been bred in captivity. More than 60 pandas at another breeding center in Chengdu were reported safe after the quake. Another eight pandas at a preserve in Ya'an, about an hour's drive west of Chengdu, were safe as well. The Wolong center is deep in the hills north of Chengdu along a winding, two-lane road that has been partially blocked by landslides.
Please check our web site later today for a link to the first in several groups of photos provided to Pandas International by the Chinese government news agency, Xinhua titled "Mourning — A Minute of Silence."To make a tax-deductible contribution to support supplies for Wolong’s Giant Panda Research Center, please send checks payable to Pandas International at P.O.
PANDA UPDATES
We all know of the devastating earthquake in China and the toll on people it has taken. In deaths, injuries and total loss of hearth and home. I haven't heard to much in the news though of the Panda Research Center. Not to worry though because DaveKay has been sending me the update reports he gets.
.
The Research Center is about 55 miles from the epicenter. Communication with those at the Center is difficult. Cell phone towers are not working and the area is very remote. Initial reports said pandas, cubs and caretakers were safe and being moved to a safer location. And they were working to confirm that info. As of May 14, 2008 Panda International believes that staff at the Research Center have survived and are working hard and are waiting further reports before issuing statements on the Pandas and their cubs.
.
I have read a News report that stated 3 of the Pandas were missing. They believe that damage to the enclosures allowed the Pandas out and are hoping that they will come back since that was the major food source for them. They are also worried that the Pandas may be very upset from the earthquake and may not act as they normally would. I don't know if this report has been confirmed or not and have checked the Panda International site but as of this post it wasn't been addressed there.
.
I'll do my best to keep updates on the Pandas posted here.
.
Thanks DaveKay for sending me the updates and Thanks to www.pandasinternational.org for keeping us updated on things there.
.
Until then HAPPY VIEWING !!

UPDATE ON EVIDENCE 4/28/08

I'm no longer "critical"!
Evidence has been taken off the "critical" list by Auburn University veterinarians and is now listed as "stable." He's come a long time in a short while - thank you all for your prayers!
Founder/Director Jama Hedgecoth was delighted when she went to visit Evidence last week and found him ready to go outside and try to play with a visiting pigeon. He was kept under close supervision by Dr. Harper at Auburn and Veterinary Student, Emily (pictured with Evidence above).
We should know shortly when Evidence is coming home. Watch for the upcoming announcement!
With much love and appreciation,
EvidenceTM and The Noah's Ark Family
