PRELUDE TO 'THE TRIP'

The flamingo chicks at the National Zoo are starting to hatch - I've attached a few shots that I grabbed the other day.

We are going to the Zoo this coming Saturday, so there will be better pictures coming, including new ones of Tai Shan, just to mention one of our critter friends down there!

BTW, I got one of my flamingo pictures published in the latest issue of Schmaps, a tourist-oriented folder/

booklet that showcases some of the more prominent attractions in the D.C. area. Google "Schmaps" - it might be on there.

CHECKING IN

Hello!!!

It seems like it's been centuries since I posted anything on "littlebit"! What with all the excitement of Karula's cubs, the Mapogos being back in town, and the torrential rains and lightning playing havoc with the whole Djuma Reserve, all eyes have been planted in that direction!

Well, I have a few shots I would like to contribute, so I'll pass them on to ya! ~ DaveKay

I posted a view of Djuma in the post below from right after the cam came back up. Well looks like they got lots of rain within the last 24 hours or so. It really is FULL now. Been a while since I've seen it that full. Good thing for the area and maybe the Hippos will come back (remember them being there?). Thing is with that much rain the animals will be able to find water in lots of places and may not show up for us to see at Djuma. Six of one, half dozen of the other (as the saying goes).

PS ~ update I just got on to catch some of the drive and we have a rain delay. So I was checking out the quickviews. I had to laugh when I saw one titled "Humgo the Hippo checking out his new home". He's already moved into Djuma, lol.

HOLIDAY MESSAGE

I was wracking my brain as to what kind of card I was going to send to everyone at littlebits, when I received a card from Tippi Hedren at Shambala Sanctuary in CA. Right away, I knew this was the one I was going to use. I figured as long as we gave credit to the origin of the card, it will be O.K. to use it. After all, it IS the Christmas season and all.... Besides, it's such a beautiful image.

It's beautiful, thank you so much for sharing this with all of us. I'll be listening come Christmas Eve. I think you found the perfect card for us. I spent sometime checking out the Shambala Sanctuary/Roar Foundation website and can't begin to tell you how awesome it is. The photos are great, the info is interesting, you can get lost there, lol. So I'm adding it over on the right, just in case you don't have time to check it out now ;)

With all the preparation for the upcoming holidays, I've let things slide just a little, so I thought that I would send a few pictures your way of some of my favorites of the last few Drives. Things have been pretty active over there, and everyone is wondering when they'll be spotting Karula's new cubs! She has them well hidden, and for good reason. At this particular age, they are extremely vulnerable, and would be perfect prey for the larger predators, not to mention other leopards! So, I'm keeping an eye open for that particular day, as are all of we "Karula-watchers"! Right?

Here are my faves for the past couple of days. Awfully difficult to hold down the number of submissions!
Otherwise, we would have a book! LOL

Here I sit, at 2:25 in the morning, wide awake! Just got off the A.M. Drive. It was, to put it mildly, intense!
Lots of stuff going on. Mvula, the dominant male leopard, made a very big appearance, and that was really the highlight! ~ DaveKay
